Omphalotus illudens (Schwein.) Bresinsky & Besl, Beih. Sydowia 8: 106 (1979)

Omphalotus olearius sensu auct. brit.
Agaricus illudens Schwein., Schr. Naturf. Ges. Leipzig 1: no. 604 (1822)
Clitocybe illudens (Schwein.) Sacc., Syll. fung. (Abellini) 5: 162 (1887)

Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees such as Quercus spp. and Castanea, usually on large stumps or fallen trunks.

Notes: Rarely reported. In Britain, known only from southern and south eastern England. Supposedly luminescent when actively in growth. Perhaps better known in Britain as O. olearius, but this morphologically similar species is now considered to be mainly Mediterranean in distribution, where it is common on olive trees. Nonetheless, a recent DNA study [Kirchmair et al., Mycologia 96: 1253-1260 (2004)] has suggested that a collection from Oxfordshire belongs in O. olearius sensu stricto, making it unclear to which of the two species British collections should be referred.

Distribution: E: !
