Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees in old woodland. Usually on large fallen trunks and stumps of Fagus or Quercus spp. Rarely on Betula spp. and a single collection on Rhododendron sp.

Notes: Common and widespread. Better known as Psathyrella hydrophila. N.B. This excludes P. piluliformis sensu NCL, for which see P. laevissima. The two taxa are frequently confused.
