Habitat: On soil in mixed deciduous woodland, usually associated with Quercus spp., but also known with Castanea and Fagus.

Notes: Rarely reported but may be locally frequent in England, from Norfolk southwards. Reported from Northern Ireland (as B. satanoides) but unsubstantiated with voucher material.
