Habitat: On soil in deciduous woodland, often with Fagus and Fraxinus. Rarely in parkland or at the edges of plantations with conifers such as Cedrus and Larix spp.

Notes: Occasional in England. Rarely reported elsewhere but apparently widespread. May be confused with Clitocybe nebularis and Lepista glaucocana if the strong odour (said to resemble violets, 'orris' roots, or 'mock orange blossom') is missed.
