Habitat: On dead wood of deciduous trees in woodland or on heathland. Most often on dead trunks or stacked logs of Betula spp., but also known on Corylus and Fagus.

Notes: Occasional in England. Rarely reported elsewhere but apparently widespread. Often confused with Postia tephroleuca, but dried basidiomes usually acquire a wrinkled, yellowish pellicle on the pileal surface. Perhaps better known as Tyromyces albellus.
