Habitat: On acidic to neutral soil, in deciduous and mixed woodland, and with conifers such as Pinus spp., also associated with Pteridium on heath and moorland.
Notes: Common and widespread, but few records from Ireland. The type of Clitocybe squamulosoides has been shown to belong here, although the name was introduced as a nom. nov. for C. trulliformis sensu Lange, i.e. C. costata.
