Habitat: Most frequently on dead leaves and stems of Calluna and other Ericaceae on heathland and moorland. Also on fallen and decayed needle litter of conifers, including Taxus. Rarely on leaf litter of deciduous trees such as Betula spp. and Corylus and Quercus spp.
Notes: Very common and widespread, especially so in Scotland where it is associated with 'Snow Blight' of Calluna fide R. Watling (pers. comm.). English name = 'Horse Hair Fungus'.
