Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees, often in large caespitose clusters. Sometimes on buried wood and then appearing as if terrestrial.

Notes: Common and widespread. Should be distinguished microscopically from the superficially similar Coprinus alopecius which has roughened or warted spores.
