Habitat: On soil in woodland and copses, and occasionally amongst grass at woodland edges. Reported in grassland and on dunes but see comment below.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. This is a woodland species and records from other habitats, especially those on dunes, should be treated with caution. Considered synonymous with Macrolepiota mastoidea in FAN5, but in Britain normally recognised as distinct. Sensu B&K4: 216 & pl. 250 is not this species but M. fuliginosa.
