Habitat: On soil (often calcareous) in deciduous woodland, associated with Acer pseudoplatanus, Alnus, Carpinus, Corylus, Crataegus, Fagus, Fraxinus, Populus tremula and Prunus avium or with conifers such as Cedrus, Cupressus, Larix, Picea, Pinus, Sequoia spp. and Taxus. Rarely in coastal scrub, with Hippophaë rhamnoides, on dunes, in hedgerows, gardens and rather frequently with Urtica dioica in woodland nettlebeds.
