Habitat: On decayed wood of conifers, usually large stumps of Picea and Pinus spp.
Notes: Known from a few, scattered locations in Scotland (Perthsire & Inverness-shire). Reported from England (Middlesex) but the specimen in herb. K is labelled 'cf.' C. caput-medusea. Last reported from Wales in 1910 but unsubstantiated with voucher material. Probably genuinely rare since basidiomes are large, distinctive and unlikely to be overlooked.
