Habitat: On decayed wood of conifers, especially on cut stumps or the cut ends of stacked trunks. Known on Larix, Picea abies, Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris and (rarely) Taxus.

Notes: Common and widespread throughout England and Scotland, less often reported elsewhere. Basidiomes are conspicuous, forming thick sheets, the general appearance likened to 'candle wax' poured over the wood. In some plantations, it has been innoculated onto freshly cut stumps as a biocontrol agent to impede growth of the virulently pathogenic Heterobasidion annosum.

Distribution: E: c, S: c, W: o, NI: !

Vouchers: England: K(M) 48147; Wales: NMW C93.21.22
