Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees in old woodland, usually large, fallen and very decayed trunks of Fagus and Fraxinus. Rarely on Alnus, Aesculus, Betula spp., Buxus and Ulmus spp. A single collection on old stems of Hydrangea sp. Also reported on soil in dunes and in gardens, but probably misidentified.
Notes: Occasional and may be locally frequent, especially in southern England in old beechwoods on calcareous soil. Rarely reported elsewhere.
