Lycoperdon atropurpureum Vittad., Monogr. Lycoperd.: 42 (1842)

Habitat: On soil in thermophilic woodlands, usually associated with Quercus spp.

Notes: A southern species, known from South Devon. Reported from Dorset, Herefordshire, Isle of Wight, North Somerset, South Wiltshire, Surrey, West Gloucestershire, West Suffolk and Worcestershire and Yorkshire but unsubstantiated with voucher material.
