Habitat: Weakly parasitic then saprotrophic. On wood of conifers such as Pinus spp., and rarely Taxus, and on worked wood such as railway sleepers, fence posts etc., especially when treated with creosote. Reported on Sambucus nigra but the host is unlikely and not verified.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Previously an important cause of decay in treated timber (railway sleepers, fence posts, telegraph poles etc.). The species has a high tolerance to creosote. Also well known for forming 'monstrous' basidiomes, often taking the f.

Distribution: E: o, S: o, W: o
