Habitat: On soil, usually amongst grass in meadows, pasture, playing fields, garden lawns, and cemeteries but occasionally in open woodland, hedgerows or on dunes.

Notes: Occasional but widespread, sometimes locally abundant but declining in many localities and far less frequent than previously. The epithet 'campestris' is often used for any 'mushroom' growing in grassland or fields and many records of A. campestris may well be of A. bisporus (and vice versa) since they are rarely examined microscopically.
