Habitat: On decayed leaf litter, usually associated with Fagus in beechwoods or mixed deciduous woodland on calcareous soil, and often fruiting late in the season. Less commonly on needle litter of conifers such as Picea spp., in plantations.

Notes: Common and widespread in southern England, but few records from elsewhere. Perhaps better known as C. hydrogramma. Excludes C. fritilliformis sensu Rea (1922) and sensu C&D: p. 179, both doubtful.
